Ian Trueman

Ian joined Hampshire Constabulary in 1991 and has predominantly worked in operational policing roles at Gosport (twice), the New Forest, Southampton Central, Fareham, Bitterne and Netley. He is currently working from Eastleigh.

Ian joined the Police Federation as a representative in 2001 and has represented officers of all federated ranks whilst on the Sergeants and Inspectors boards. Ian has been trained in and experience of representing colleagues in misconduct, post incident procedures, equality matters, and police pension and related ill health matters.

In 2006, Ian became the full time Joint Branch Board Secretary working from the Federation office at Winchester and was re-elected in 2007 and 2010. As the local branch secretary Ian was responsible for the negotiation of force policy and procedures with senior management, as well as daily management of the office and responding to assistance requests from colleagues for the issues listed above.

In January 2011 Ian became a full time member of the Federation's national committee, representing the Inspecting ranks for the south east of England. A position he was re-elected to in 2014. As a national representative Ian took a lead role in the consultation with ACPO on their national diversity policy, and represented the federations of England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland in a College of Policing review into police ill health and pension management.

In 2013 Ian was elected as the general secretary and treasurer of the Inspectors Central Committee. In this role Ian negotiated (as part of a team) with the Home office on the most fundamental changes to officer terms and conditions of service in a generation. He reformed the Inspectors budget to change a deficit into a surplus during a period of declining membership numbers, as well as piloting the initial financial reforms of the national federation committees.

In March 2015 Ian stood down from his national role and returned to force for personal and family reasons. He returned to the Federation in April 2016 as the western area Inspectors' representative.
