Message to our members - Pay Award 2017

As many of you know the police officer pay award is normally announced in July ahead of its implementation in September. This year the Police Federation has called for an increase of 2.8% despite the public sector pay cap being set at 1%.

We have now been advised that the 2017 police pay award will not be announced until after Parliament returns from its summer recess on the 5 September. No reason has been given for this delay.

On your behalf I have written to all our local MP's calling for them to support an end to the public sector pay cap, a number of MP's have responded asking to meet over the coming weeks. Whilst I understand the cynicism from many of you of what this will achieve, I feel it's better to at least try to influence them than to do nothing.

With the previous pay freeze and then subsequent 1% pay cap officers have seen a real term cut in their pay of 15%, it' important that all MP's understand the harsh reality of the impact of the pay cap on colleagues.

Any delay in making the police pay announcement is unfair and is playing politics with what is supposed to be an independent process.

There is little more I can tell you about the reasons for the delay but wanted to make you aware. As soon as we hear anything further we will let you know.

Many thanks

John Apter
